Taste of Pure Jersey Afternoon Tea at Park Lane Hotel London

This week is National Afternoon Tea week in the UK and another excuse to indulge in more of this delightful tradition. English afternoon tea dates back from 1800’s, and it’s such a famous and unique British tradition. I remember as a child playing  with my dolls, pretending to prepare afternoon tea and to invite with my late mum to have tea with ‘us.’ We would have proper tea that she called it ‘calor com gosto’ meaning heat with taste.  I have very fond memories of a happy childhood in Brazil. My mother and I always had afternoon teas with cakes and sometimes followed by ice cream, I think that’s when my ice cream obsession started.

I was very excited when Cooksister invited me to join her for tea at London’s Park Lane Hotel, Piccadilly, an art deco building in the heart of Mayfair, what a beautiful setting for our afternoon tea. It was not your traditional fare either; it was a special Pure Jersey Afternoon Tea, special to celebrate and promote the Isle of Jersey finest produce.

We started the proceedings with a nice glass of champagne and savories delights
Savouries
Honey roast gammon, cider and chilli jam on little ciabatta bread
Juicy roast sirloin of beef, a thin layer of golden blue cheese just the right amount and peppery wild rocket in white bread was excellent.
Blue lobster, lemon crème fraiche and caviar in a light buttery brioche
Hot smoked salmon, cucumber, dill and mustard mayonnaise  on brown bread
Jersey royal potato and asparagus quiche, the pastry was rich, flaky and had the right snap to it the quiche filling made of Jersey cream was delicate, the perfect pie.
jersey clotted cream, jersey black butter, berry jams and scones
Scones
Vanilla & Apple and raisin scones, were just good and quite petite and served with Jersey Black Butter, three fruit preserves and Jersey clotted cream
How do you eat your scones? cream topped with jam or jam topped with cream?  Well, I tried both and they were delicious! The Jersey black butter has a texture of single cream, and there’s no butter involved in the making of this preserve. It’s a blend of apple, spices, dark treacle (molasses), cider and brown sugar – delicious!  The Jersey clotted cream was silky and tasted great.

Thanks Jeanne aka Cooksister for being such a fabulous hand model
 Pastries
La Mare Black Gold 70% dark chocolate caramel
brownie with Jersey Cream Fudge – my favourite!  rich and very chocolate, not too sweet, just right.

Apple Brandy Cream Liqueur crème brûlée with spicy shortbread black butter biscuits

Peach and strawberry yogurt cheesecake with a coconut base, full of texture – quite nice.
La Mare Gin with Tonic jelly -well, those disappeared awfully fast….

tea at Park Lane Hotel

Herbals & Infusions –  our ‘tea’ choice: chamomile:   whole chamomile flower, resulting in stunning freshness and light  fruity flavour a relaxing caffeine-free drink and vanilla black tea: black tea scented with vanilla delivering a sweet, perfumed aroma with a rich, woody flavour. I added milk to my last cup of vanilla black tea, and it tasted like milky dessert.

Highlight and unexpected:  a harpist entertained us, she added a very calm and relaxing atmosphere to our afternoon tea. She had an extensive repertoire and a captivating sound. Lovely! I enjoyed the tea, and the location was a glorious art deco room and the service was polite, friendly, and any issues were cordially dealt with no fuss. Recommended for Londoners and visitors alike. It was a great experience and left me wanting to get to know more about Jersey.
