A Stroll Through Downtown Las Vegas

There are many things to do in Vegas apart from casinos and here some of things I got up to while in Las Vegas.

Enjoy A Unique Part of History At The Neon Museum

770 N Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89101, USA

This museum is filled with vintage neon signs, collected as a means to preserving a little part of Las Vegas history. The grand opening of The Neon Museum was marked by the establishment’s first restored neon sign at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Fremont Street, the Hacienda Horse and Rider.

To explore even further, I took a guided tour of the Neon Boneyard, where I saw old, retired neon signs from downtown casinos that have come and gone. Each tour is an hour long, and are available every day of the week. Be prepared as It can get quite hot walking around under the sun.

The Boneyard opened back in 2012 as part of the nearly two-acre museum. This outdoor exhibition space houses over 200 signs, some of which have been fully restored, as well as a visitor’s centre in the lobby of the former La Concha Motel.

The Boneyard is also home to the North Gallery, where you can marvel at even more rescued and preserved signs. If desired, this is the perfect spot for various special occasions, for weddings or photo shoots.

The museum itself has numerous public art displays, including nine famous signs that have been sympathetically restored.  In its gallery, I was able to view fantastic pieces of history in the form of neon signs such as The Silver Slipper, Society Cleaners, the Hacienda Horse and Rider, The Landmark, the Bow & Arrow Motel, the Lucky Cuss Motel, the Normandie Motel, Binion’s Horseshoe and 5th Street Liquors.

The Atomic Liquors

917 E Fremont St, Las Vegas, NV 89101, USA

It is a must stop for a drink, a get away from glitzy and glamour of Vegas. Atomic Liquors is the oldest freestanding bar in Las Vegas, boasts the first package liquor license and off-sales permit in the city.
It was opened in 1945 under the name ‘Virginia’s Cafe’ until 1952 when it changed the name to Atomic Liquors, due to a nuclear testing site just 50 miles away. In that age of innocence, it quickly became fashionable to  grab an “Atomic Cocktail” and climb a ladder to the café’s roof to watch for mushroom clouds on the horizon.  Nowadays the roof is closed but the bar still there.  Obviously I had to spot there for a drink.

The Wonders of the Fremont Street Experience

Zip line in Fremont Street Experience

Located in the westernmost part of Downtown Las Vegas, the street spans five blocks of Fremont Street and is home to numerous attractions. The most famous of these is a huge vault canopy measuring 460 metres long and 27 metres high. Here, tourists can attend free concerts along three large stages.  These events are usually free and have helped the venue become one of Downtown Las Vegas’ most popular attractions.

For years, the Fremont Street Experience has been known to locals and tourists alike as “Glitter Gulch,” thanks to the myriad of neon signs spread across the area. Apart from the colourful visuals, this is a large pedestrian mall that attracts numerous tourists throughout the year.

The Fremont Street Experience has various other attractions to be enjoyed, including the SlotZilla zip line and I was told an annual New Year’s Even party with fireworks displayed for all to see on a large presentation screen.

Oxygen Bar

Indulge Yourself  At The Heart Attack Grill

450, Fremont Street downtown Vegas

This is an absurd yet spectacular Las Vegas installation. The concept of the Heart Attack Grill is something you can’t possibly fathom until you witness it for yourself – I only witness from outside.  Located in Neonopolis; this hospital-themed establishment boasts an outrageous sense of humour and an incredibly indulgent menu.

If it weren’t so hilarious, it would be absolutely frightening.  I didn’t go in but you can see the menu listed outside. From a “Quadruple Bypass” hamburger to “Flatliner” fries, visitors are sure to nurse a substantial food coma after their meals. Perhaps, something for next visit to Vegas.

I love Las Vegas, but we don't go very often. I find I spend way too much money there. I have wanted to go to the Neon Museum for a couple of years, and I think we'll finally get there in April…yay! I'd never heard of the Atomic Bar…but you've definitely convinced me to go.

Lovely! I've been to Vegas twice but not been to that fabulous Neon Boneyard, and I love the look of it. I'm also wondering whether it was the location for a scene in Mars Attacks? Looks familiar!!
