Le Garrick is located right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Covent Garden, London. I passed many times over the years I’ve been living in London and never went in! I meant to but just didn’t happen. Until last week when I was invited to review their Bastille Menu.

Bastille day is a public holiday, the French National Day, which is commemorated on the 14th of July each year, it’s the celebration of French culture with lots of festivities and fireworks all over France.

In London, there are a few themed parties and gatherings to mark the occasion – any excuse for a party! And Le Garrick, true French institution in London for over 30 years, has put an excellent La Fête Nationale menu showcasing their signature dishes.

The decor is very rustic French, small but perfectly formed. There are seats outside, perfect for the unexpected Summer weeks we are having at the moment. Ground floor there a few tables and downstairs is very charming with a couple of caves perfect for dinner parties.

The Bastille Day menu includes all the classics and regional recipes. We started with super heartwarming onion soup topped with taste and grated cheese, and Moules marinière, which was delightful. The accompanied bread wasn’t exceptional, just average – it did the job.

For main courses, my companion ordered the Poisson du Jour which was a fresh and quite generous sea bream with new potatoes and Sauce Vierge, light and colourful salsa made of tomatoes, shallots, basil, olive oil, lemon juice or balsamic vinegar, and salt and pepper.

I had the cassoulet de Toulouse traditional dish from Toulouse consists in duck confit, pork belly and Toulouse sausage with beans; it was a plentiful and very satisfying dish. The meats in the cassoulet were top notch! We combined this meal with a rose wine from the exclusively Le Garrick’s French list.

The finale, the traditional Cafe Gourmand with coffee – I love this dessert so much I had to order one at Le Garrick. The Fondant Au Chocolat topped with vanilla ice cream and more chocolate sauce was an excellent chocolate fix.

Le Garrick, also It offers a la carte and pre/post theatre menus, making a perfect stop for a drink and some food before or after hitting the theaterland and the shops in the area.

If you are in the area looking for a heartwarming, homely and straightforward French meal, Le Garrick fits the bill.
