French wines with style

Paramount, views over London

The Paramount is set at the summit of Central London iconic Centre Point. The location of my next wine adventure and what better place to sample some great fermented tipple and learn about the diversity and accessibility of French Wines and a masterclass of food and wine matching with our host with the most, Douglas Blyde in partnership with Sopexa UK.
Over the course of the evening, our host fabulous handpicked French wines were paired with some tasty food from around the world. It was the grand tour of France through wine.

The first wine of the evening:
We drunk on its own: AOP Muscadet Côtes de Grand Lieu, Domaine du Haut Bourg, Le Pavillon 2013  a white wine @ £9.90 from the Loire, fresh, it offers a blooming bouquet, with notes of white flowers. Great aperitif.

Ceviche
AOP Alsace Morrisons’ Signature (Cave de Turckheim) Gewurztraminer 2013, medium rose scented, with a hint of lychee and low acidity wine – great as aperitif or oriental food. Priced at £7.99 at MorrisonsAOP Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh, Plaimont Producteurs, Saint Albert 2011 – white wine @£13.99  from Corney & Barrow, unexpected sweetness of honey and sublime sugar balance and freshness. A wine with long legs!
This wine went very well with the Ceviche; I loved the sweetness of the wine and saltiness of the Ceviche contrast.
Thai crab cakes:
AOP Savennières, Domaine des Baumard, Clos du Papillon 2006 – wine  priced @£19-21, from Hawkshead wine and fine wine Co.
A refined white wine, grape Chenin Blanc, fruity with great minerality.AOP Côtes de Provence, Château Miraval, Rosé 2013 – wine priced £18  from Lay & Wheeler – beautiful bottle holding a lovely pink high quality organic wine. Delicate, fruity and strawberry and peaches notes
Mushroom risotto:
AOP Côte Roannaise, Domaine Sérol, Vielles Vignes 2013 –priced at £8.95 Intense ruby/purple coloured, floral and fruity red wine with notes of dark cherry. Easy drinking red.
AOP Alsace, Domaine l’Agapé, Hélios 2012 –£25.80 from Hedonism Wines.  An elegant and balanced  Pinot Noir. Great choice with the earthy Mushroom risotto.
Roast beef with yorkshire puddings and horseradish sauce:
Vin de France, Domaine Comte Abbatucci, Faustine Rouge Vieilles Vignes 2011 – £25.50 from Dynamic Wines. A full-bodied and complex Corsican wine.
AOP Saint-Julien, Domaine Henri Martin, Château Haut-Beychevelle Gloria 2009, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and  Petit Verdot. Priced at £24.99 from Waitrose Cellar, Red/violet deep colour, long length and blackberry and vanilla to the palate. Great Red wine my favourite of the reds of the evening.
 Cheese board :
AOP Rivesaltes, Domaine Cazes, Ambré 2000 – Grape is Grenache, retails at £13.4 (375ml) from thedrinkshop.com
A vintage fortified wine with complex aromas of dried fruit and citrus peel. Great accompaniment  desserts and cheeses.
I really enjoyed this evening of discovering new French wines, like the
Vin de France, Domaine Comte Abbatucci from Corsica,  and the experience of choosing between  two wines that for my taste went well with the food on offer. It was a great exercise of food and wine matching. Of course, our host was as funny and entertaining as ever.
Thanks to our host and sommelier Douglas Blyde for a great evening of quaffable and elegant wines, and tasty food.
Disclosure: I was a guest of Douglas and Sopexa UK at this event.
