Looking for something different to do? This program is certainly an unusual choice. I was curious to find out what the course entailed. Originally, I was booked to go to the Covent Garden Market trip, funnily enough that is located in Vauxhall, and day course of flower arranging. But due to some more travels, I have to move to the hand-ties and posies.
First a bit of background, The Covent Garden Market was located at the former vegetable and fruit market in London WC2, now a popular London shopping and tourist area, and the Royal Opera House, which is known as “Covent Garden”. However, back in 1974 due to traffic congestion the market caused, it moved to Nine Elms in Vauxhall and still kept its name. I’ve been to the market before, so I wasn’t too disappointed.
The Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

The course
1) a very quick motion of design, put together a personal hand tied bouquet and posy
2) the importance of design
3) knowing flowers and different foliage
4) techniques, materials and tricks
5) from the selecting of colours and conditioning and care of flowers
6) perfecting the shape of a bouquet, to mastering the classic ‘spiral’ of stems
7) method of making a lovely posy
The course starts with an intro to the course and getting to know each other. After that a demo of how to put a hand-tie bouquet together. I was thrilled when eventually I mastered the ‘spiral’ technique! It’s not that easy. Also, controlling all the stems and foliages with one hand and tying the bouquet is quite a challenge. I am not ambidextrous!
